Cooters in February

turtlessun2If there is a predator around here for the turtles, I don’t know what it is. When it gets warm the Cooters come up to sunbathe.  They crowd onto every available floating piece of log. There were probably about thirty more scattered around the pond when I took this picture. Attempting to get any closer usually results in them all sliding silently back into the depths…

Snapping Turtle


This female is digging in the dirt to lay her eggs.

The combination of ponds, woods and open fields on our property attracts a variety of wildlife year round. We see lots of turtles sunbathing on the shores of the pond when it’s warm. But snapping turtles don’t seem to be avid sunbathers. They don’t appear quite so often, but we see them when they climb out of one pond to get to the other one. Continue reading
